Three songs to introduce you to Brother James

The Dream
I Had to Dig
Give Yourself a Break

Brother James is a spiritual singer-songwriter whose genre-bending arrangements blend with contemplative storytelling in pursuit of a deep meaningful life. Imagine that Paul Simon, Pete Seeger, and Paul McCartney became monks and then delivered hand-made monastery wine to your door — if that's appealing to you, Brother James' heart-forward indie-folk is for you.

Host a Concert/Gathering

Let's share my songs in your home, spiritual community, or otherwise.

I'd love to come play songs in your home, for your spiritual community, or whever you'd like to have me. I'll play a handful of my songs, maybe make up a new one on the way there, and we'll probably have some sort of deep discussion about who knows what. But most of all, I love to make a living room full of strangers feel like a family and invite us all into deeper life together. Read more below if you're interested!

Intimate concerts in homes and churches are my favorite kind of musical experience. My least favorite setting is to play a bar where people are talking in the back, the sound is too loud, and there's a clear separation between audience and performer. I'll happily play anywhere, but the most meaningful moments of my life have been sharing or receiving music and stories in intimate spaces with people I love or strangers who have just become friends, or stepping into a deep discussion inspired by some work of art. That's my goal with every concert — to facilitate transcendent moments in which we all move toward deeper life together.

I also love to partner with local causes and organizations that are meaningful to the hosts, and ideally collaborate with some local artist or other creative partner. I want to draw folks in from the broader community who care about doing good for the world, and hopefully we can all give each other a bit of inspiration to continue growing and stepping into the good work in front of us.

House Concerts

A living room full of your friends, neighbors, and maybe a few of my friends who are soon to be yours. Swapping stories and songs over a shared meal — what could be better?

Spiritual Gatherings

There's nothing I love more than partnering with a spiritual community that's engaged in doing good for the world and caring for their local community in tangible ways.

Discussions & Workshops

Songwriting and spiritual workshops are some of my favorite ways to share my gifts; if that's something you're interested in, I'd love to see if there's a good fit for your community.

My prefence is a full room of any size — 20 people in a room that fits 15 feels way better than 40 people in a room that fits 100. And whatever space you have, we'll work together to fill it. I'll provide resources for you to advertise on your end and then send out the invite to my social media, email list, and try to get some radio play in your area to draw folks who might like the music. And even if somehow we don't fill the room (we will), some of my favorite musical experiences have just been swapping songs and stories with 5 people over a shared meal — as long as we can cover my expenses, I'm happy to share my songs with whoever's there.

In order to make touring sustainable, I generally aim to make at least $750 from an event. But if $750 isn't feasible for you (or if on the other hand if $750 is an easy lift for you and you want to support human-generated art), please ignore that number and let me know what feels right for you! But if $750 feels like a lot — we can consider all kinds of options: a set ticket price, a suggested donation, or having a tight-knit community subsidize the event (a church, a patron family, etc.).

If there's a guest room, air mattress, or couch over 6', I would welceom your hospitality but I never expect it. In most cases if I line up a few shows I can work out a free or affordable housing situation, but by all means let me know if you have ideas — I prefer to build deep connections with my hosts when it's welcome!
